Taking care of business - Finding a public toilet in Australia

Updated: Dec 2, 2020

This is a sensitive issue, and rarely talked about. My question is... Have you ever wet (or worse) your pants when away from home because you couldn't make it to a toilet? They are often hard to find. Let me say.... it has happened to me, and it is embarrassing, inconvenient and with some people - something that stops them from getting out and about.

Thanks to a free app that you can download to your phone, this could be a thing of the past. The National Public Toilet Map app is so easy to use. Over 19,000 public toilets are listed on the app, with more being added daily.

The search facility is very user friendly and allows you to find nearby toilets. The map can be zoomed in and out. Click on the toilet you want on the map and it will give you further details.

If you go to their website www.toiletmap.gov.au you can search for toilets in a destination you will be visiting with the Plan a Trip guide.

Once you press Plan the app will open with a map that can be zoomed in and out. On the left hand side will be a guide to all the public toilets along your route, and facilities available there. How awesome is this?

You can also personalise your results by setting your preferences to return to toilets that meet your needs and trips you have taken.

Directions can be given either via a map or viewing locations in a list.

The above symbol list is listed at www.toiletmap.gov.au

I hope this app and the website gives you the confidence to travel without worrying that you may not find a facility to help you.

Happy Travels!
